Spotify cover art size and requirements
Spotify takes square cover art from 640 to 10,000 pixels a side, as a JPG, PNG or TIFF in sRGB. Apple Music recommends 3000 × 3000 or larger with a 1400 × 1400 minimum, so a 3000 × 3000 JPG or PNG in RGB suits both and is the size most distributors ask for.

Why 3000 × 3000 is the safe choice
A 3000 × 3000 file sits inside Spotify’s range, meets Apple’s recommendation instead of scraping its minimum, and matches what most distributors ask for or recommend. Going bigger rarely gains anything, since covers are shown far smaller than 3000 pixels on phones and computers, and your distributor’s own limits may be narrower than Spotify’s 10,000.
Don’t get to 3000 by enlarging a smaller image. Spotify says not to upscale, and Apple asks for artwork that isn’t blurry or pixelated. If your artwork only exists at 1000 pixels, re-export it from the original project or photo, or rebuild it at full size. Going down is fine: to turn a 4000 × 4000 export into 3000 × 3000, use the Image Resizer with the aspect ratio locked.
Your distributor delivers it
Artists normally deliver cover art through their distributor rather than to Spotify directly. You upload the cover with your release, and the distributor passes it on to Spotify, Apple Music and the other stores. Distributors each set their own rules, so read your distributor’s artwork page, and where it’s stricter than Spotify’s, follow the distributor.
File problems that get artwork sent back
Most of these don’t show when you look at the picture, which is how a cover that looks fine can still come back.
The colour profile
Spotify wants sRGB with the profile applied to the pixels, and it doesn’t support embedded colour profiles. Photos and exports from phones and Macs can carry a wider profile such as Display P3, and print work may be CMYK or Adobe RGB. Convert the image to sRGB when you export (Photoshop’s export dialog has a Convert to sRGB option), then check the colours still look right.
Transparency and bit depth
24 bits per pixel means three 8-bit colour channels and no transparency. A PNG with a transparent background, or a 16-bit file from a photo editor, doesn’t match. Flatten the artwork onto a solid background and export at 8 bits per channel.
Rotation stored in the file
A phone photo can look upright on your computer only because the file carries an instruction to rotate it. Spotify doesn’t support that orientation metadata, so the cover could appear sideways. Opening the photo in an editor and exporting a new file usually writes the pixels the right way up. The Cover Art Size Checker tells you whether a file still has rotation stored in it.
Shape, size and file type
A crop that comes out at 3000 × 2998 isn’t square. WebP and HEIC aren’t on either store’s list. A JPG saved at a low quality setting falls short of Apple’s 100% quality, and a small image stretched to 3000 pixels counts as upscaling. PNG is lossless; if you use JPG, export at the highest quality setting.
What’s in the picture
Apple doesn’t accept advertising or marketing, website addresses, brand logos or dates of future releases on the artwork. It also refuses misleading covers, such as one that prominently shows an artist who doesn’t perform on the release. For the design side, see How to make album cover art.
